About the plans

The Shigshop plans are downloaded and easily navigated via a browser.

Included are easily printed 2d drawings (via a .pdf file)

The plans were developed via a CAD program called Sketchup.  The Sketchup model is included along with some basic instructions on how to navigate within the Sketchup program (a free download is available).  If you just want to build and not mess around with CAD software, just use the 2d drawings - Sketchup isn't required to build this bench.

Also included are a material list, a supplier/parts list, and browser based instructions that have many photos and descriptions stepping you through the complete process to build your bench.

More info on the bench

The bench is designed to be built with 20 boards of 8 foot 2x10 dimensional lumber, which will yield very little waste.  For the bench, there is not too much hardware, just some lag bolts, hex bolts/washers/nuts and wood screws (for the cabinet).  Combined with the leg and wagon vises, it's one awesome woodworking station.

Separate plans are available for the leg and wagon vise.

A cabinet is a nice option

The cabinet plans are included - its a nice feature that provides a little additional shop storage with its 3 drawers and the top doubles as a shelf.

The plans and instructions include the bench, cabinet, gap stop, and sliding deadman.

The main base components. These pieces with the top slabs complete the bench (leg vise is optional - but not really ;).
The bench breaks down into easily manageable components, which makes it simple to build in a one person shop, plus, when the time comes, its handy for moving.

Typical woodworking machines were used to build the bench.  I used a table saw, radial arm saw, power planer, my Shigshop thickness sander, bandsaw, router, and router table, as well as hand tools such as chisels, mallets, wrenches, sockets, taps, etc.  There are many alternatives in making the bench parts.  The whole bench could be built with hand tools - many people have done similar benches that way.

Customer comments

John writes:

Tim, thanks for putting together a great set of bench plans. I have been thinking about a bench for some time and have already bought several other books and dvds. In comparison your price is extremely reasonable for the tremendous amount of information. I would recommend these plans to a friend and I am looking forward to putting my own together with your ideas.
