Cherry and maple night stands

Without too much planning, these were built in a traditional craftsman style for the master bedroom.

The design

Picture
The project was done in my pre-CAD days and were built on the fly.  Mortise tenons were used for the stand cases and box joints for the drawers.  Figure 8 connectors attach the tops.

The build

The tops are glued up panels while the shelf and sides use slat construction.

There are a few benefits had from using slats rather than panels for shelves:
  • Much less material is needed
  • Simple too build with less glue up, planing, and sanding
  • Light weight, sturdy, and good looking
I've built a few pieces of furniture using this type of shelving and plan on doing more.

If you have a good, fast way to cut mortises, slat shelves are a good option.  I use the slot mortiser made from Matthias Wandel's design.

Not too many pics of this build.  Once all of the pieces and joints were milled, the main cases were glued up.

The cases are cherry, while the drawers are maple.  For the drawers, finger joints were used and the pulls were custom made from some maple scrap.

The drawer slides were made from maple and were glued to the case to line up with the grooves in the drawer sides.

Figure eight connectors were used to attach the tops to the cases.

Finish

The tops and drawer fronts got a few coats of semi gloss poly and the rest was satin finished.
