Maple and fir night stands
Back in the early 2010's while my son was in high school, he designed a new bed that we built with maple. That's a heirloom piece that he will have for his whole life. The bed is nice, but needed some night stands. 2020 Christmas was a good opportunity to build some.

The design
I designed a larger and smaller version - the larger version got built. As you can in this pic, I planned on using the Festool domino jointer, but traditional mortise/tenons could have been used just as well.

The build
I built 4 of these - a set for my son and one to go into a spare bedroom in our house. Once a machine operation is set up, it's easiest to cut all of the similar pieces at one time for all 4 tables.
There will be a difference in each pair of night stands though. One set (for us) gets a plywood top with solid wood edges, while the other set (our son's), gets a solid maple top. |
Not too many pics of this build. Once all of the pieces and joints were milled, the main cases were glued up.
The cases are cherry, while the drawers are maple. For the drawers, finger joints were used and the pulls were custom made from some maple scrap. The drawer slides were made from maple and were glued to the case to line up with the grooves in the drawer sides. |
Figure eight connectors are used to attach the tops to the cases.
|
Bronze boat nails are used to attach the slats to the side rails.
Finish
The tops and drawer fronts got a few coats of semi gloss poly and the rest was satin finished.
